The farm is used as a Language Material in a Montessori Primary classroom. It is perfectly made with realistic figurines which are created considering the scale and the true ratio of sizes. All animals, people, well, etc. almost everything is like real ones.
The farm is an excellent resource for practicing grammar work in a concrete form. Here is something real and concrete e.g. noun. You write for the child and ask him to bring you a cow. He brings the cow. Then you tell him – Yes, this is a cow, but this is not the cow that I thought about. I’ll write for you, what kind of a cow I want. You write the distinguishing feature-adjective (horned, spotted, brown …). This work is initiated by the adult and then it is carried out by the child independently by reading the prepared slips. There is also a place for a box with symbols. All in all, it is a very strong and effective language development material.
You can introduce many different adjectives in a concrete way using animals, for example, the horse. It can be black-footed, red-haired, white-maned, black-tailed and white-tailed, spotted, black-eared or speckled . Likewise you can simply expand the range of options in each individual category (bull-calf, horse-foal, poultry, farmer, sheep-ram-lamb).
The work with the farm covers all parts of speech- prepositions, conjunctions, verbs, adverbs. In general, what I can say about the result of working with the farm is that children are simply mesmerized by the material, they now have additional motivation to go further into reading.
Learning to read is so much fun in this way…
